Educational Events for Coaches and Directors

Just thought I'd start a new thread for this season's upcoming workshops, seminars and other educational opportunities. Please post any events that you don't see on this thread.

PSA educational credit affadavit: http://www.skatepsa.com/PDF%20Documents/new%20aff.pdf
NB: Looks like this is revised from last year.

A PSA member can attend an educational event and send in an affadavit even if they are not rated yet.
They have one year to take the BA exam after the workshop. The credits will be "counted" towards their required education.

USFSA Basic Skills Meetings and Workshops

From the USFSA Basic Skills program:

Jan. 30, 2010 – Ogden, Utah
March 6, 2010 – Northfield, Minn.
April 18, 2010 – Pineville, N.C.
I attended the instructor's workshop two years ago and it was wonderful. (It was a full day, however, and included lunch.) It gave me validation of my already-established teaching skills and helped me learn new ways of teaching elements. The workshop included on- and off-ice presentations and discussions. I really appreciated the Lesson Planning segments.

After you've completed the half-day instructors' course, there is a "Learn to Teach" written exam for the Basic Skills program that earns you a certificate of completion. It's not a PSA exam, just a "what did you learn? Very good: here's your certificate" exercise.

I haven't attended a half-day Directors' meeting. It's focused more on the business end of running a program.

PSA members can take the written Basic Accreditation and Sports Science exams after the workshop.
You can submit an affadavit to the PSA and receive continuing educational credits towards maintaining your PSA Ratings.
(They announce the number of credits you can claim during the workshop.)

The Directors Meeting and Instructors Workshop each cost $35, according to the forms on the website.
One takes place in the morning, the other in the afternoon, so interested pros can attend both if desired.

These are FREE full-day seminars that are offered to ISI Professional members each fall. The Instructor Training covers teaching, judging, review changes and updates, explain the new promotions. There is also an on-ice portion that's targeted towards test/competition standards and offering new teaching techniques. They also offer the WeSkate instructor certification programs.

The Management series is geared more towards Directors and Rink Managers. It's not offered at all sites.

The ISI Judges' exams are available after the workshop.

You can submit the seminar for PSA educational credits using the PSA Affadavit form. The meeting coordinator will tell you how many eligible credits are available.

PSA Entry Level Coaching Course

From the PSA website: http://www.skatepsa.com/PSA-Entry-Le...ng-Course-.htm

Quote:
This one-day course is an introduction to coaching at the entry level. It is a recommended learning resource for new and beginning coaches of ice skating and a valuable refresher for experienced coaches. The purpose is to build a foundation of resources and tools for the coach to start his/her business of professional coaching. It involves both on-ice and off-ice classes.
Upon completion of this one-day course the coach will:
• Have an understanding of the figure skating sport system in the United States and the rules that govern it.
• Have an awareness of their role as a coach and be better prepared to conduct his/her business as a professional coach.
• Understand basic skating movement and be able to deliver instructions clearly.
• Be able to reproduce basic lesson plans and teaching progressions using information provided.
• Be aware of skill analysis and how to develop this skill.
• Have an awareness of ethical coaching behavior and the proper procedure for skaters to change coaches.
• Be able to develop an emergency plan and provide for a safe learning environment.
Oral and written rating exams will also be offered at each site.

<snip>

Applications for rating exams are available on the PSA website www.skatepsa.com by clicking on Rating System and either download an application or complete an online application. For further information email, ratings@skatepsa.com.

I really like the fact that they've made it clear that you do NOT have to be a PSA member to attend this course. It would be great for a coach just starting out.

NOTE: There are no upcoming dates for this workshop. Hopefully, new dates will be announced soon.
